How long are license suspensions in PA?

Pennsylvania license suspensions typically range from 0-18 months depending on the circumstances.

  • With a BAC below .10% there may be no license suspension for a first offense. However, this is only true if the driver meets certain criteria. Additionally, there can be a 12-month license suspension for a second DUI offense with a BAC below .10%
  • If you have a BAC greater than or equal to .10% and less than .16%, there will be a 12-month license suspension for a first OR second DUI offense. Furthermore, there will be an 18-month suspension for a third DUI offense.
  • A BAC greater than or equal to .16% equals a 12-month license suspension for a first offense and an 18-month suspension for a second or greater DUI offense.
  • For out-of-state DUI convictions, there will be no suspension for a first offense and a 12-month license suspension for a second or greater DUI offense.

What types of license suspensions exist?

  • Ignition Interlock System: An Ignition Interlock system is a device that will stop someone from driving drunk. First, the driver must blow into the device before the car will start. At this point, if the system detects alcohol on the driver’s breath the car won’t start.
  • Ignition Interlock Limited License: The type of license allows someone to drive a car with an Ignition Interlock system. A driver may have the option for an Ignition Interlock Limited License, if certain requirements are met during the term or part of the term of the license suspension or revocation.
  • Probationary License: A person whose Pennsylvania driving privilege has been suspended or revoked for five or more years may be eligible for a Probationary License (PL). In particular, this license allows you to drive a non-commercial vehicle between 6:00 am and 7:00 pm. Privileges for additional driving hours may be requested from PennDOT.
