Job Description: Paralegal – Criminal Defense
Daily Responsibilities and Duties:
Overview of Position:
Paralegals play a vital role in supporting attorneys throughout the entire legal process – from initial case preparation to post-trial procedures. They serve as key coordinators, often acting as liaisons between attorneys and clients, experts and other stakeholders. This position requires a high level of organization, legal knowledge, and communication skills to ensure cases progress efficiently and effectively.
Core duties and responsibilities may include the following:
Case Intake and Discovery Review:
- Reviewing and organizing discovery materials (e.g., police reports, affidavits, search warrants).
- Manage case files and tracking deadlines.
- Preparing and filing motions, notices, and other legal documents.
- Identify inconsistencies or rights violations in evidence or procedure.
Legal Research and Document Drafting:
- Conducting legal research on statutes, case law, and procedural rules.
- Drafting motions (e.g., to suppress evidence, dismiss charges), subpoenas, and notices.
- Prepare legal correspondence and summaries for attorneys.
Client and Witness Interaction:
- Interviewing clients and witnesses to gather case facts and timelines.
- Coordinating with expert witnesses and investigators.
- Communicating with probation officers and court personnel.
- Maintain regular communication with clients.
Trial and Hearing Support:
- Assist in developing trial strategy and organizing exhibits.
- Prepare witness lists, trial binders/trial notebook and jury instructions.
- Attending court proceedings to take notes and provide support.
Post Trial and Appeals Support:
- Draft and file notices of appeal or post-conviction relief documents.
- Organize records for appellate review.
- Track deadlines for post-trial motions.
Administrative and Investigative Support:
- Coordinate with investigators and expert witnesses.
- Maintain case files and calendars.
- Ensure compliance with court rules and filing procedures.
- Filing court documents.
- Handle large volume of cases.
